post hurricane

On Sunday, after the hurricane was a distant memory Bill and I drove out the the Udvar-Hazy air hanger to go see the "annex" to the Air and Space museum (we will go there tomorrow or Wed). There we got to see the space shuttle - so awesome- and an amazing collection of fighter jets.
I have been so excited about seeing this all summer - it didn't disappoint!

One of the most historic and game changing things you can see.

Today we visited Mount Vernon, and old town Alexandria. The weather was so perfect for strolling around the grounds, visiting the house, gardens and the grist mill. Unfortunately, the wharf and farm were closed because of trees downed by Hurricane Irene, but we still saw some of the cows, sheep and pigs. We also saw the tomb of President Washington and Martha Curtis Washington and visited the newly built museum.

busy as a bumble bee

we leave on Saturday for our trip so we have been booking hotels and planing routes looking up bbq joints and making lists. Now for those of you who know me you know what a control freak I am about things like vacations. I like to have a plan and I like to have a schedule and I like to have lists. So because the plan is finally forming and lists are being made I am finally feeling a bit more at ease about the trip and am now very excited.

On top of that we had a busy weekend which included a nice long bike ride on sunday. unfortunately, since that ride. i have had itchy bumps on my shoulders and across my chest. and no, i haven't changed detergent/soap/lotion. the sad thing is it's wednesday and they haven't gone away.

yesterday we ate some broccoli from the garden... i am always so impressed by how much each plant can provide for a person. we have 8 plants and about once a week harvest a small serving for each of us either to be steamed or put into stir fry.

going down to NC

Bill and I leave for the first of our BBQuest 2009 spots. We will have tee shirts in hand and I am sure we will take pictures, but here are the two graphics that we have for the tees:

In other news we had a nice weekend. I went to Ran's bridal shower, which was very nice, while Bill weeded in the rain. It rained on and off all day Saturday. Sunday we went to a gardening store after church and got all the do-dads to make a new and improved rabbit fence. We also picked up a few seedlings and exchanged some pots. Then we went home and took out the old fence (wood post had already rotted in the ground) tilled all the soil and mixed in some peat moss transplanted some plants to increase the size of the garden and made one of the two fenced in areas. last year we ran out of chicken wire and had extra wood posts. this year we ran out of metal posts and have a whole extra thing of chicken wire.

I have changed the design of my garden a bit from last year and wanted to give people and idea of what we did. The first picture is last year. notice the blocks representing the brick "wall" i used to finish out fence because we ran out of wire. in the second picture, notice the path making it easier to get to the food, the trellis that i will grow my cucumbers on and the bump out in size (i took the other plants and put them in other parts of my yard.) Oh and a got i big soaker hose that i will wind through and be able to connect my hose to water better with less wasted water.
Obviously i am very excited about this year's garden. I hope everything grows as good as last year.
