Winnie!

We picked up our dog Winnie on Saturday. She suffered shell shock the first 5 hours as we drove her home. She has increasingly become more comfortable around us, making our lives more difficult as NO and OWCH become common place words in our vocabulary. She is 9 weeks old (about the equivalent of a 14mo old). she likes to chew (on everything) and is very playful when she isn't sleeping. She loves peanut butter in her "kong" and her jerky treats she gets when she "goes" outside. We hope that as she gets more used to us and our home she will calm down a little (probably a pipe dream).

Christmas has been a bit different, but its been a nice day. It was warm here today and all the snow we got last weekend (all 12") is gone. Bill and I spent today at home with the dog and had our nice Christmas dinner in hoodies. We hope that next year we will spend Christmas with my family as it's been 3 years now.

REVISED**

Yes #4 is no longer applicable, thank you Christmas bonus.

Monday, December 10, 2007

Things I want...

...but won't get for christmas.

1. for all the craziness to stop throughout the world. Seriously people enough with the guns bombs and craziness already.

2. To see my family... all of them. With Bill's side here, Mom and Bob in AZ and the majority of the rest in Cleveland I will not get to see most of my family this year at Christmas time. Even Brian is leaving me to spend the holidays with his GFF.

3. My windows. My windows were ordered in October, but the likihood that I'll get them for Christmas is shrinking daily.

4. A new computer. what tiwht the windows (see above) and puppy (see below) the hope of an iMac faded a while ago.

Happy over eating day!!!

this holiday like so many leaves me puzzled. can you imagine a conversation like this:

Alien: So tell me about this Thanksgiving
Me: Well, it is a holiday that celebrates the fall harvest and how the Indians (Native Americans) helped the white people survive.
A: So how do you celebrate?
M: first you get in your gas guzzling SUV or hop on a plane and go visit your family. Then you cook a 25 lb turkey (plus an extra one for left overs) along with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, rolls, salad, 4 kinds of pie and then you eat until you are uncomfortable and then you eat some more.
A: so it is a holiday about food?
M: no it is a holiday about thankfulness.
A: But didn't the white people decimate the Native Americans?
M: Yes but we are still grateful that they welcomed us as we spread violence, disease and guns across their lands.
A: so the way you express your thankfulness for your blessings and bounty is to stuff yourself silly and then sit around while millions of people world wide would give anything for just a bite off your table of pleanty
M:basically, yeah. Oh and don't forget the football. Or Black Friday.

AZ

Back from AZ. We had a very good time... Bill and I were both pooped after the trip though. We didn't have a ton of time but we did get to a fun wine bar, toured Taliesin West, toured the boulders area, looked at some homes, had a nice family dinner and met mom's new friends.

We did take some shots of FLW's home and grounds. maybe Bill will get them uploaded soon.

so turkey day is fast approaching. we have presents to buy and wrap. packing to do and are car to tune up. Kermit is visiting on Sunday (yea) and at some point we have a ton of house work to do.

The Christmas season is almost here. I can't wait for lights and garland and ornaments. And maybe a cute little welsh corgi.

CA

or captian awsome. I have given a few new tv shows a try (of course with the writers stike they might all fail) but I think I have found some to dvr and keep me amused.

Mondays:
Chuck It's such a cute show for the geek in all of us. And two of my favorite charachters are Captain Awsome and Agent Casey. If you are looking for a cute dramady this might be a show for you.
Journeyman nowhere near quantum leap or sliders this show could have potential so for right now it stays on the season pass
Tuesdays:
Reaper Not bad and I like the actors. I know i swore off WB/CW but this show has a funny story line and Ray Wise as the devil makes me tune in every week.
Wednesdays:
Pushing Daisies Such an over-the-top cutely morbid show that i really and transfixed by it. Kristen Chenoweth and Chi McBride ofent steal the show what with the singing and knitting.
Dirty Sexy Money Mr Sutherland is a great asset to this amusing life styles of the rich and famous show

So these are the additions I have made. If you have other suggestions of shows to try let me know. otherwise I usually just tune into HBO (saw North Country this week) Food Network(Good Eats and the bastardized Iron Chef) and 95% of all HGTV programs

Colbert

watching tv last night.... Colbert always cracks me up.... no wonder he is doing better than Kucinich in the polls ....

Colbert's Absinth-tinence Pledge

"I (insert name here) do hereby pledge to practice absinth-tinence by remaining absinth-tinent from absinthe… since absinthe incidents in many instances induce incipient synesthetic inspiration and sinister synthetic insistence on sin, I sincerely insist I will be absent from instances of absinthe ingestion this instant”

new windows please

who would have thought glass could be so expensive. Bill and I are spending every night this week hanging out with people from different window places. pretty soon i am going to be like: "ok you have 5 min to tell me why your windows are better than everyone elses, and then go measure and quote us"

in other news, mo and david were out this weekend and though we didn't get to go to the new star wars exibit, we did show them uofc's campus, stop by the smart museum, and go out the the burbs for shopping and bowling. (too bad it wasn't bowling in bollingbrook.) we ate at rezas which was yummy and wayyyyyyyy tooo much food.

this month like every month is very busy. The Breast cancer walk is this weekend and Bill and i are close to 2300 (Bill is beating me but I have found my peace with that) If you didn't donate there's still time :)

Happily ever after

Tuesday afternoon: mimicing Frank edition

Well, we're back from our whirl-wind visit to Cleveland. The wedding itself was a beautiful ceremony outside, dinner was fabulous (i think that food was better than most mid to upper priced restaurants in Chicago, and it was for 100+ people) and the dancing was fun... BUT it was very hot and some people had too much to drink and ruined the night for others. I guess when you get a large group of party people together these things just happen.

It was great to see the kids and my aunties. It was nice to chat with mimi and giddo after the party. And it was good to have breakfast with dad... who makes a mean banana cream pie.

What about your mother, you ask? Well we saw each other, but as she is visiting in 2 days, we didn't spend much time catching up.

I have a few good pics from the wedding and might post some later when i have our computer.

Up to bat this week: more work on our family room, mom's visit, and maybe finally getting my house back to its normal chaos instead of the heightened version that's been going on now for 3 weeks.

And, not that I would forget it ever, but the events of 6 years ago today have flashed through my mind throughout today. Let's leave it at that.

Thursday, September 06, 2007

getting done getting going

well we have primed and painted the walls and ceiling of my family room. i have painted the closet doors and i have prepped the upper moulding for painting.... we bought the stuff for the closet ( love me some container store on sale)

this weekend we travel and go back to Cleveland for a wedding. it will be nice to see family, especially some cousins that i haven't seen since last year.

ok folks i will probably blog next week at some point, hopefully telling you that our house is habitable once again, even if the room isn't done.

WALLpaper?!?!

so what i thought was just an annoy faux finish with paint was really an annoying faux finish with paint on top of WALLPAPER!!! garr..... i curse laziness and all previous owners of our home. We are now behind probably 3-4 days meaning extra work for sarah nightly an perhaps a half day of vacation this friday. oh and because of all of this i think i have "white lung" seeing as i have inhaled large amounts of the crumbling drywall compound that is in between the paint and the wall paper.

EDIT: So apparently my very lay person speak is confusing it isn't the drywall itself that is in between layers it is the mud/Spackle/ "compound" or what ever you want to call it. whatever it is is is highly annoying as it crumbles between the lay of paint and layer of wallpaper. it is as if you were sanding new drywall not just stripping wall paper.

Side note: I have been thing i would like to make a tee shirt with a Rosie the riveter type of cartoon holding a spackling knife saying "I love to strip" I could wear it when ever i am doing home improvements and it would make me laugh.

Hi A. Terry!

So A. Terry reads my blog (so does RJ but he got his response in comment form.) Anyway, I am happy to know that this works even with a very small audience.

Today is Saturday, wow those weeks just fly by. Schools started over here this past week, and as if God Himself doesn't like to go back He rained upon us all week long. Bill and I were lucky, no wind or water damage, and we only lost power during the day while we were both at work anyway. Thank goodness for that.

Today we had dentist appointment and for the fist time since we started going to Maria neither of us had cavities (yea) So, apparently the last few times were really because of the bad care of previous dentists and lack of fluoride. We went to sears (again) and got more tools (again). I jokingly told Bill that he now had everything he needed to build our deck himself. he retorted with a dead serious tone that everything we had was cordless and for the deck he would have to buy all corded.... back to the drawing board on that. but we are making progress with our family room. there are now 2x4s in the hole and the drywall will hopefully be cut and mounted tonight. By the way i never realized 2x4s aren't 2x4 call me dumb but why?!? wouldn't you just make a 2x4 actually 2x4 or call it a 1.whatever by 3.whatever.

ok time to go help with the dry wall and maybe get to use the new power sander :)

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

alive and well

not that anyone blogs/ read the blogs any more. but I like to belive that some day with will be the perfered way to let people know that you are indeed alive and well. Tome at least it is prefered to a chain email or something in that vein.

anyway Bill and I had a decent rainy weekend and have started on our next big project. I think after this is done we will try to have a get together for all you local chicagoans. again we are taking before during and after pics.... i hope that we can get the dry wall up and ready to be painted by the weekend but we'll see.

Work is good for Bill and I. We will be posting info about the breast cancer walk (Making Strides against Breast Cancer) we are doing... we are looking for people to walk and if you don't want to walk to at least donate. I think Bill will be the one setting up the page. Basics: 5 mi non competative walk in Orland Park (at the mall) Oct (breast cancer awareness month) 21. more info forthcoming.

cough cough

so I've been sick but lets see if i can recap the goings on of late.

thursday we went out with lily peter and brian to celebrate the dual sib birthday.

friday was spent doing god knows what (probably watching movies on hbo)

saturday got our veggies and cleaned in the am and then left for a whirlwind tour of the burbs... in naperville we went to the spice shop and the wine shop and the kitchen store get spices wine and lunch boxes. Then we went to the best buy to look at stereo systems but ended up with only a new ds game. Next was Ethan Allen where we found a fabric we (Bill me and Megan our designer) could all agree on for our new love seat for the family room that needs to be redone. Then it was on to REI to see if they had winter boots yet (no!) and to look at back packs (to much padding!). Then onward and upward to Nordstroms to get my pants hemmed and to Sears where bill found large sets of sockety-ma-bobers and another (better!) cordless drill. we looked at the freezers too, but Bill and I have a hard time seeing eye to eye as i want the 21 cu ft energy star freezer that has a digital read out and bill wants the 14 cu ft dwarf of a freezer. We then went to the container store to get more plastic boxes that repel bugs from living in our shoes. Dinner at a place called claim jumper (meh for the service but thumbs up on the dessert). Finally we went and saw stardust. I found it to be very enjoyable, but i think many people just won't "get" it.

whew!

Sunday we got up and got ready for franks party (yay!). Picked up brian and christy and some jamba juice for my sore throat/ cough. Hung out at Franks for good food and some truly intense sun. Just as we're about to give in the party was moved into the ac (thank god!) and we hung out for a while longer before having to drop brian and christy off so that the latter to catch her plane. then after having some extremely frustrating times we got back on the highway and headed home. except that we had to stop at home depot and the grocery store on the way. by that point i was feeling really sick and went to bed, got up had some dinner went back to bed.

monday slept until 1130 got up had lunch back in bed by 2 slept until 7 something when bill got home had some soup and stayed up to look at speakers at the best buy near us for a little bit and then back to bed.

tuesday work. dinner of yummy chard greek bean salad and pizza followed buy a trip to yet another different best buy. this time coming home with some speakers and an amp which will keep bill busy until friday at least.

so now that you have a feeling of whats been going on I'm my life how about you drop a line, or even just a comment to let me know YOU are alive and well.

1080p 300.... look at those abs

yes we went out and got 300 yesterday, impulsive but we figured it was a good movie to get for our blue ray. oh... yeah.... this weekend bill finally got his ps3 while there are still no games out that he wants, we wanted the blue ray player and the price is pretty good with that drop and really we don't need to wait for the 80 gig.

anyway in the specials on the dvd they show how they trained and the exercise routine (or lack of routine as then never repeated the exact same eroutine ever.

anyway not much else going on.... happy birthday to mimi on monday.

ok later

Monday, July 23, 2007

finished

yeah in between a car checkup a furniture appointment a lunch with bill's mom and sister a shopping trip to nordstroms and a block party on saturday i finished the book around 10:30pm. I enjoyed it and that is about as far as I will go as I really wouldn't want to spoil the book for anyone.

yesterday bill put together my bike and we went for a short ride. either the seats are getting harder or my seat is getting softer b/c bike riding isn't as enjoyable these days.

Thursday, July 12, 2007

hp the movie

i enjoyed it ... not the best book, but a good adapation and solid acting.

bill was saying it's funny to watch a kid grow up as some one else on the screen....

now i wait for number 7... i am almost done with six.

Monday, July 09, 2007

Yeah I'm a HP dork

I can't wait until the movie and book come out... I have dutifully reread books 1-4 and am currently on 5 the goal finish five see the movie start on six and then read seven..... but to make my timing work better i have also re-watched movies 1-4 this weekend as i didn't want to finish book five too soon before the movie.

Monday, July 02, 2007

well, you know where the world's gone...

when he's the responsible parent.

in other news... we have officially opened the house to visitors as it has met the red aunties' approval.

We had a real weekend back at home, and as Bill had worked all of last weekend this was really our first weekend back since out trip. needless to say a month with out attention left our yard with a tone of weeds high grass and over grown hedges. we conquered the worst of the first and all of the second and third. we still have a ton of weeds and grass seed needing planting. also our shrub in the back and up and died for the most part. Mimi is convinced that if we cut it way down it will come back... and since we have nothing let to lose on this one we might be finally buying a saw (and maybe I can slip in that axe bill won't buy for me.)

We had fun with the aunties at the art museum and a good dinner at wildfire, which has never disappointed us with guests. Brian and Christie had fun playing wii friday and sunday, and we have learned that there are two acceptable gifts for Christie, anything with an owl and anything scrapbook related.

This week is very odd what with the two on one off two on set up but what it means is that we cooked out yesterday and we will have cook out leftover for the next two days only to cook out again on the 4th.... maybe having the fourth on a Wednesday isn't so bad after all.

so since our deck project as been put into a holding pattern worse than at O'hare, we are probably going to move onto the new windows and bathroom projects. Neil, if you have any sink advice now's the time to give it.

pix but not the ones people want to see

this is the dark purle columbine that i got last weekend. it's starting to bloom.

Thursday, May 03, 2007

that's all you've done?!?

so the pictures are slow coming mostly because bill and i haven't finished the touch ups and while you wouldn't see that in the pics i'm not hauling all of the painting stuff out of the room until we're really done.

Brian humbled us a bunch when we proudly showed off our room... apparently it just isn't as impressive to an outsider....

good news we have a mattress for any friend or family that come to visit.... we also have a door back on our bedroom and we have put away our luggage (sorta) that we had continued to live out of until our bedroom set came last week.

so today is may 3rd and it is important because a month from today bill and i will be boarding the first leg of our flight headed to Barcelona via London.

thats about all that is going on....

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

if all the raindrops....

were lemon drops and gumdrops, we'd be drowning in candy.

it's been raining for about 12 hours straight now.... and the forecast was: today rain tonight rain and tomroow rain clearing up by the evening.

hopefully this rain will seep the weed killer into the ground and kill all those nasty weeds in our front lawn...

not much else going on right now. its about a month and a week before we leave on out trip now and i thing both of us are really starting to get excited.... (now what should i start planning?)

our bedroom set comes tomorrow and tomorrow i take a field trip with work people to go visit my new company. we will all hold hands and use the buddy system as we learn about the place we will be moving to eventually.

ok hope every one is doing well.... once the bedroom set comes i will show pics of the room progress.

highs and lows

this weeks events have depressed me a lot. i don't know why, maybe i was good and ready to get in a funk about something, but I have lost much hope for human development in compassion understanding and fraternity.

the highs in the post refers to the massive headache i get daily from painting which i have been doing more or less since friday when i am at home. the paint isn't as strong as it used to be but with one one window open and not much circulation the bedroom stinks.

anyway i think i'll crawl back into the funk from which i came. maybe the nice weather we are supposed to get this weekend will pull me out.

Saturday, April 14, 2007

Happy Birthday!!!!

To Carolyn today and Mom yesterday.

And don't forget to do your taxes.

Thursday, April 12, 2007

so much to do never enough time.

yeah wish i had a week of weekends :)

Lost was really good last night making me remember why i liked the show so much in the first place.

so our trip is coming up soon but it is the furthest think from my mind... i know in may i'll start re reading my bcn books and trying to figure out what the hell the Italian train websites are saying to me.

since the quarter ended not too long ago I am swamped with work. but i am so tired that i just can't make myself be highly productive. don't get me wrong i am getting my stuff done, but usually i am able to kick it into high gear easily.

I have shin splints again. i hate when i get them... ll it takes is some moderate walking in high heels and bam! pains for a month. not good since i am now walking so much. oh and since we moved i have lost about 4 lbs... but sarah you say that is probably just water weight or stress and either way it will come back with vengeance.... shhh let me believe that this little bit of extra exercise is helping.

oh the ethan allen people called today our furniture is ready but can't be delivered until the 26 (which is ok since we need to paint) now once that is done my list of stuff to do will be a tiny bit smaller. by the way if anyone knows of people who build decks or if you can build a deck give me a call i have got a great job for you.

No Accumulation

So yesterday when all the talk circulated the office that snow was a-comin' I checked out the forecast for h-f. rain turning to snow no accumulation. I am guessing that the NOAA's definition of accumulation pertains ONLY to snow as there was about 2 inches of sleet that i trudged through all the way to the train. Over all i think that this weather blows and I can't wait for summer, but I must say that at least easter, though cold was pleasant.

We had my in laws over for some ham and potatoes and then drove brian (in the most round about way possible) to the airport.

Then i got sick. not the normal week long not feeling good sick but the fever chills achy dizzy 24 hour flu. I hate that feeling lucky for me that it only lasts about 24 hours.

Yesterday I made a kickbutt 5 spice marinade and Bill stir fried up some yummy food. other than that i was mildly successful in putting away some stuff that we were waiting on the dining room set for.

Today lost is new and that will be priority number 1 (jk) ((sorta))but really i think if it isn't too cold i'll try to clean up the basement some more that way this weekend we can PAINT!!!!! (BTW anyone who wants to is welcome in helping paint our room put up my new closet demo bills old closet and put up a new on there too.) I got good news on monday that our bedroom set should be arriving in 2-3 weeks! yay!

ok i am sure non of you really care about any of this but since my blog is only half for you and half just to get the rambling out of my mind and onto "paper" tough cookies.

Thursday = Friday

I love when you come into work on a Thursday knowing that it is really Friday because you have tomorrow off.

Today our DSL is supposed to be up and working. Tomorrow our dish is to be installed and our one couch delivered.

Brian arrived safe and sound will all of my dining room set intact. By the way for those of you considering renting from Budget truck rental. Talk to me before you do so. I have some choice words about them and their poor customer service and lack of basic skills at the truck place.

anyway if i don't get online before Sunday Have a happy holy Easter to all who celebrate and to those who don't -go get a chocolate bunny on sale.... you can't go wrong with a chocolate bunny :)

Tuesday, April 03, 2007

hmmm

so the game didn't go as i had hoped but really FL is the better team and at least this OSU team came out and played. And with all the freshmen i think the team might be in a better position next year.

so last night we were able to watch the game on the big tv, but because cbs stinks we can't get their hd channel. we get nbc, abc, pbs, fox, and a bunch of other hd channels but no cbs. (we had the same problem with the superbowl.) anyway that meant that i would flip from pbs's hd history of the Viking to the regular fuzzy basketball game. needless to say i was more interested in leif ericson than fuzzy greg oden.

Right now i am currently on hold with Dish trying to add some "club dish" number to my order to give lily a referencing bonus. but so far the dumb thing has taken 20 min of my life away. this isn't a good start for dish and i hope to heaven i'll never have to call in to them again because the automated system is awful and their customer service is very lacking.

rematch

lets hope that tonight's game goes more in favor of osu that the last championship game.

this weekend was good. Bill and I bought lots of furniture for our house this weekend and while we might not have cable yet we are getting closer to a usable rec room with a tv and two "cubes" set up in our basement.

Brian comes in this week and maybe we can get started on painting the master bedroom

Easter Sunday will be my brother bobby's birthday ... he turns 20. i remember how much it sucked turning 20... esp since most on my friends were 21 at the time. sorry bobby.

in and unpacking

thank you all for all of your well wishing and thoughts this weekend.

We are in the house and in the process of getting things unpacked and settled in. Hopefully, by this time next week we will have internet and I will be able to blog email a bit easier.

the weather has been typical chicago 80 for two days then down to 50 and rain. but i have been so tired and exhausted the weather and world events slip buy me...

hope everyone that reads this is doing well and doesn't feel snubbed since i haven't been able to blog as much. oh and if you haven't already go check out franks blog with his link to his walk and roll page. its a good cause and if i was in town I wish I could join him that day.

long week with no end.....

life has been beating down on bill and me lately... mostly in a good way, but still we are both exhausted.

we close tomorrow and we move on saturday. if you have ever done this you know why we are exhausted. the only thing that could be worse is having a baby.

out side of that we had brian with us for a night and it was good to see him. due to his exuberance in playing tennis, thought, i am thinking foam might be a nice addition to our basement ceilings :)

ok people wish me luck... i probably won't blog again for a bit.

gone about as fer as they can go....

Things are progressing nicely at this time. not much to report on the house... lots of packing being done... but seeing as I hadn't blogging anything substantial in a while an update is in order.

on the 2nd i dragged Bill along with me to go see Oklahoma on the big screen and meet Shirley Jones who was there for the screening of both that movie and the Music Man. That was really fun to see the movie on the big screen and to just ignore the impending packing that needed to start soon.

last week was a blur of packing and avoiding packing. i would say we're about 1/3 the way done now... and considering the move date is set on the 24th we are about where we need to be. oh and last week's Heros was great... i will be missing that show until it comes back.

This weekend I.... spent 5 hours of my live watching TLC's "what not to wear" on friday night. i had to stop when they started repeating episodes form earlier in the evening... so then i watched princess diaries (which i love). ...Sat we had a car appointment they stole our car made us get a rental and have not called us as of yet with any good news (if you haven't heard my tirade on the car don't ask). then we had lunch with Frank and got some of our pent up energy out playing tennis. of course we weren't outside in the beautiful weather but inside playing on our wii. ...Sunday we got to meet Bill's older cousin's new baby at a baby party in china town. The little guy is very cute with crazy amounts of hair and big fat baby cheeks. everyone told bill and me (but mostly bill since i don't' speak Cantonese) that we were next and we must hurry up..... lots of pressure.

this week so far has been a mixture of tired and tired. the time change thing has thrown my body for a loop and the fact that i haven't been getting to bed at decent times isn't helping.

anyway. i will up date you all (alana) when i know anything.

for jed...

tv guides review....

from Roush Review
The Donnellys are four Irish-American street punks dragging each other down
as they recklessly stir up violent clashes with the Irish and Italian mobs in
New York City. To say these guys are stereotypes does insult to the clichés they
clumsily represent.
