getting better

so I am starting to feel better just in time for another weekend. Hopefully, we won't be up to much this weekend.

Today we got cookies at work to celebrate a new account. Considering the economy right now, we are pretty darn excited about this account.

Not much else going on... have a nice weekend!

MLK day and inauguration day

So I wanted to blog last night but didn't get a chance. and I want to blog this morning but it isn't going to happen before 11. so...

I don't really believe in chance. things happen for a reason. I am hopeful that our new president will lead our country into a more peaceful and prosperous situation. I think that it is fitting that his inauguration is happening a day after the birthday of a great leader. I hope the our new president, like MLK can find constructive solutions instead of destructive, that he will lead by example and make us proud.

crabby!!!

not the emotional state but those little sea creatures that taste so good.

once a year we go out with Brian (usually Christie is here too) to Shaw's during dungeness crab season. usually they also have the Nantucket bay scallops, but due to the cold weather no one is fishing this week. (this makes bill very happy and me not so much... me not so much because i love those tasty morsels... bill because he has happily offered to take me back next weekend (conveniently he can get more crab too))

_____
Ok I wrote that before last night's 3.5 hour crab-fest. Dinner was very good and I was fun to go out with Brian and Christie and Brian's roommate Brian. The guys got the family style crab dinner:cup of chowder, 1 crab cake each 1 cluster of dungeness crab legs each 3 (i think) king crab legs each and then a large slice of key lime pie. you would think Christie and i ate less but not really (though Brian will be eating some of Christie's dinner for lunch today. I am always amazed the the guys can eat all the crab... oh and the sides (potatoes spinach and cole slaw).

but enough gluttony. This week I get MLK day off and then there is all the inauguration hoopla across Chicago. Next week is Chinese New Year, and the week after that the Superbowl, a week off before Valentines day and another long weekend. What I am trying to say is that we have weathered the lull after Christmas and New Years and now there should be stuff to keep us busy until the first signs of spring. And honestly, I don't thing it can get much colder and nastier than this past week.

brrr...

It's cold out. not that whiny below freezing cold, but that bitter below zero cold. out near we used to live they were having below 40 wind chills. right now the city has a reading of -4 with wind chills around -25.

With walking to work I made good use of all layers possible. long under wear tops and bottoms wool pants turtleneck sweater. plus 2 sets of gloves mid thigh goose down coat, goose down boots that hit mid calf. big wool hat and wool scarf.

I must say though my long underwear from rei is great. it kept me warm outside and unlike most people i don't have to remove it once at work as it is wicking and not too warm.

So bill is going out tonight which means I have to cook for myself. knowing this over the weekend i bought a tasty looking bunch of beets. so i will have left over beans and fajitas and beets. yum!

and now it's going to below 0 too!

ai yai yai!

More snow this morning. and more predicted. the weather page in the newspaper says "possible 60 hours under zero" ugh!

Last night, we had cranberry beans that I slow cooked for 10+ hours... i think i could have just eaten those with some white rice, but they were just a side show to my fajitas. we used Penzey's spice mix to marinate the fajitas. It has just enough heat for me (which means my mouth is on fire but Bill finds it flavorful). I love the spices we get from Penzey's. I want to be a better cook just so I can try out more of their spices, and everything we buy from them is fabulous.

Enough of my free advertising, on with the show (or snow)!

storm of the century

not so much eh?

but just because the blizzard didn't seem as bad doesn't mean they are wrong about the bitter cold that is coming our way. i have consistently heard -2 as a high for Thursday. bundle up people!

Winnie is the only one in our house really loving this weather. she would stay out all day long if we let her. she love running/jumping through the snow, eating the snow, rolling in the snow. its like every time she sees it it is her first experience with it. I love making big snowballs and feeding them to her (sometimes she eats so much snow it gives her coughing fits.)

Last but not least... it's on facebook, but dad wanted to see our homemade egg rolls. we got better at the "folding" of them so that they started to really look right towards the end. the earlier ones look more like some flat rectangular dumpling.

new delhi

or should i say new deli.

Jen recommended this deli south of us on dixie.  went and it reminded me of a newer cleaner corky and lenny's .  anyway got fresh bagels for tomorrow after having matzo ball soup and corned beef sandwich with homemade bagel chips.  so much for not leaving the house again.  but when we left for dinner the side streets still had not been plowed and it was still snowing.

snow!!!

lots of snow! well not like Cleveland but i think since early Friday we have gotten over 6 inches. (i am not the best at estimating.)

Winnie is on the porch playing in the snow right now. she is such a snow bunny! but i am watching the travel channel and pretending i am in the warm Caribbean where Sam is with the Freedom of the Seas. mmmm warm warm cruise ship.

i doubt we will get out much more today. it is just too snowy and they haven't plowed our street yet. oh well time for some hot chocolate and a good movie.

life keeps chugging

it's Thursday. This week, as i said before, has moved very slowly. not for lack of work or anything to do, but just because I am used to the more restful life of vacation.

I was just saying at lunch that I am waiting for my house and millions to come from some unknown relative. I then said it must be from my dad's family since I know all of my mom's. Malesa, you just let me know when that ship comes, ok?

I was supposed to start my fitness and eating healthy campaign this week (thanks Malesa for the fish recipe it was very good). it sorta has worked, but I think that my spin instructor put it best on Tuesday "we over estimate how many calories we burn and we underestimate the amount we eat." so last night, i through my hands in the air skipped any work out and made a huge batch of mac n cheese.

After we had finished eating and Bill was working, we flipped to one of the HBO channels to find that the golden compass was just starting. Meaning to see it in the theaters, but never making it, we decided to invest the time until midnight watching it. I really enjoyed the movie and wish that they would make the next in the book's series. Maybe I'll just get the books from the library.

This weekend, I don't know what we will be up to other than Bill having a dentist appointment on Saturday morning. Maybe we can get the basement the rest of the way done, but more likely we will just try to stay warm as it is supposed to get deadly gold in the upcoming week.

long long week

it is always hard that first week back to work after all the holidays. I haven't worked a full week in a while, and today, Tuesday, it's already starting to smart.

see post below

friday or monday

Like I said yesterday I kept thinking it was Sunday yesterday so I have been caught off guard twice now thinking it was Monday. The good news is the weekend is closer than I would think (Caution: Objects in mirror are closer than they appear)
______
Something that I find amusing when walking around on a sunny winter day like today is the Ice falling signs. Not that ice falling is amusing (it's quite leathal acutaly), but the wording/ images on the signs always make me snicker. I will try to get a picture of my favorite one, which is an image of a man with a frown face, hand over head and an icicle smashing his hands. There is another sign not ten feet away from another place of business that is so wordy I can never finish reading it before passing it by.
______

I hope to get motivated this weekend and really get my house looking good. You know you have lived in construction/ chaos for too long when your younger brother comments on the general disaster that you house has been in for the last year.

Happy New Year

Bill, Brian and I had a lovely new years eve last night, toasting and counting down for both the "real" EST new year and the silly central time new year.

Today, Bill got mario kart for the wii, which resulted in the three of us playing this afternoon and Bill and I playing tonight.

It's weird to have a holiday in the middle of the week, so today feels like a Sunday. (And since you are supposed to go to Church, I guess it is like a Sunday).

I am trying to waste some time online right now waiting for my Christmas photos to load on snapfish. Usually, I can amuse myself pretty easily, but today I just want to get offline and go to bed. Oh well, maybe I'll just sit back and listen to my ABBA, which is playing right now.
